Garwood home of the shortest state highway in NJ and maybe the country

Route 59 (old route 22) is less than 800 feet long and is a state 4 lane highway.  It runs between North and South Avenues under the NJ Transit train tracks. The highway is located on the Garwood-Cranford boarder.

Click on the pages titles in the middle of this page for other old photos of Garwood.  The 1903 Drawing and the 1940s Arial photo may take a bit of time to download, but I made them large so you can see some detail.

The old center street crossing (c1950s)

How would you define a "Old Time Resident of Garwood?"  Well maybe if they remember life BEFORE the underpass was built in the mid 1960s. JFK Plaza was part of Center Street back then (see above).
